Chasteberry (Vitex Agnus-Castus)
Chasteberry, commonly known as Chaste-Tree Berry, Vitex, Monk's Pepper, is the fruit of the Chaste Tree, a small tree native to Central Asia and the Mediterranean region. It has lance-like leaves and fragrant flowers. The dried ripe Chaste berry is used to prepare extracts that make capsules and tablets.
History and Folklore
Vitex had been used for more than 2,000 years in ancient Greece, Egypt and Rome to treat many gynecologic conditions.
During the Middle Ages, it was believed that it promoted chastity and decreased sexual desire.
Chaste berry works mainly through the pituitary gland which regulates all other glands, including those that produce sexual hormones, such as Protactinium and Progesterone. Protactinium is the hormone that causes the production of milk and Progesterone is a hormone that regulates the female menstrual cycle, pregnancy and the development of the fetus.
Chasteberry (Vitex) Extract has a regulating and strengthening effect on both male and female reproductive system. It is used to promote libido in both sexes and is a commonly included ingredient in many sexual health formulas.
It relieves menopause symptoms, because it contains estrogen and progesterone like compounds, which regulate the hormonal imbalance. In Europe it is actually the most favorite herbal remedy for menopause.
The berries of the Chaste Tree contain active ingredients called flavonoids which have antioxidant activity. Antioxidants can prevent the damage of cells, so this plant has beneficial effects for skin, especially at menopause, when dry skin, wrinkles, cellulite, stretch marks and unwanted facial hair are very bothering.
