Echinacea
(Angustifolia/Purpurea)

echinacea

Echinacea is commonly called Purple Coneflower. It grows in eastern and central North America. It is actually one of the most popular herbs in USA.

The name "echinacea" comes from the Greek "echino", meaning "spiny", due to the spiny central disk. Because of the scales in its large conical seed head, the herb resembles an hedgehog. Hence the name!

The parts used from Echinacea Angustifolia are the dried root and the rhizome.
The fresh root of Echinacea Purpurea has similar properties to Angustifolia, and is widely used worldwide.

History and Folklore

  • Echinacea was widely used by the Native Americans for its general medicinal qualities. Results of archeological digs indicate that Native Americans may have used this plant for more than 400 years.

  • Some of the tribes used Echinacea to treat the symptoms of the common cold. The Kiowa used it for coughs and sore throats, the Cheyenne for sore throats, the Pawnee for headaches, the Sioux from South Dakota used it as an analgesic. It is said that Native Americans learned of Echinacea by observing wounded elk seeking out for these plants and eating them.

  • From the mid 19th century through the early 20th century, Echinacea was one of the basic antimicrobial herb, and it was used for wounds, boils and other skin problems.

  • In the 1930's, Echinacea became popular in both Europe and America as a herbal medicine used for treating or preventing colds, flu, and other infections.

  • It became increasingly popular in Germany throughout the 20th century. In fact, most of the scientific research on Echinacea has been conducted in Germany.
