Essential Oils

Essential Oils are natural substances that are extracted from plants through a process called steam distillation. Essential Oils affect the body's physical and emotional levels by relaxing, rejuvenating, healing and energizing. The use of Essential Oils is called Aromatherapy.

Essential Oils are largely used in spa treatments. They are never applied directly on the skin surface, and never used around eyes. Essential Oils are diluted in Carrier Oils before use. The most used Carrier Oils are Olive Oil, Sweet Almond Oil, Jojoba Oil.

How to use Essential Oils

  • Massage - Add 6-10 drops to one ounce of Carrier Oil and massage directly into the skin. Use Essential Oils like: Ginger, Lemongrass, Orange, Basil.

  • Soothing Bath - Add 6-10 drops to bath water and soak for 20 min. Use Essential Oils like: Lavender, Neroli, Ylang-Ylang.

  • Compresses - Hot compresses - for chronic pain like joint pain, backache, tired muscle. Add 6-10 drops of hot water. Dip cotton strips into liquid and wrap around or apply to affected area. Use Essential Oils like: Rosemary, Thyme, Pine, Eucalyptus.
    Cold compresses - for acute pain, like headaches or sprains. Dilute 6-10 drops in in ice cold water. Dip cotton strips and apply.
    Use Essential Oils like: Lavender, Peppermint, Basil.

General Classification of Essential Oils

  • Antibiotic (inhibit the growth or kill bacteria) - Tea Tree, Chamomile.
  • Antiseptic (prevent breakdown of organic tissue) - Basil, Bergamot, Black Pepper, Camphor, Cedarwood, Cinnamon, Cloves, Lavender, Lemon, Nutmeg, Parsley, Rose, Sandalwood.
  • Astringent (prevent bacterial infection and firms skin) - Bay, Cedarwood, Cypress, Geranium, Juniper, Lemon, Lime, Myrrh, Peppermint, Rose, Rosemary, Sandalwood, Yarrow.
  • Antidepressant (calm nervous system) - Bergamot, Carnation, Lavender, Lemongrass, Neroli, Orange, Chamomile, Sandalwood, Jasmine.
  • Tonic (improve vitality, stimulate circulation) - Basil, Black Pepper, Carrot Seed, Clary Sage, Geranium, Ginger, Lemon, Lemongrass, Myrrh, Nutmeg, Neroli, Orange, Pine, Rose, Rosewood.
  • Aphrodisiac - Angelica, Basil, Black Pepper, Cinnamon, Clary Sage, Clove, Ginger, Jasmine, Nutmeg, Pimento, Rosewood, Sandalwood, Thyme, Ylang-Ylang.

Carrier Oils

  • Olive Oil - It is rich in vitamins, minerals, proteins and essential fatty acids. It is best to use extra virgin, cold pressed oil. It is a good carrier oil for skin care, especially dry skin. It makes an excellent conditioner for hair and nails.
  • Sweet Almond Oil - It is an excellent skin lubricant, rich in minerals, vitamins and proteins. It is soothing, healing, softening, revitalizing and nourishing. Good for sensitive or irritated skin.
  • Jojoba Oil - It is rich in Vitamin E and it has antioxidant properties. Very similar to our own body oil secretion (sebum), it is easily absorbed by skin. It is beneficial in facial and body oils, as well as hair treatments. It is great for mature, aging skin and wrinkles.
  • Apricot Kernel Oil - It is extracted from the seed of apricot fruit. It is very rich in vitamins and minerals. It is easily absorbed by skin and it is used to treat sensitive, dry, dehydrating and aging skin.
  • Avocado Oil - It is a heavy oil and usually it is mixed with other oils such as sweet almond 10-25%. It contains essential fatty acids, minerals, protein, Vitamins A, B, Vitamin E and beta carotene. It is good for skin regeneration, used to treat dry, dull or dehydrated skin.
  • Borage Seed Oil - It is used for all skin types, excellent for mature skin. Rejuvenates and hydrates. It is usually blend with other carrier oils, because it is very rich.
  • Castor Oil - It is used mainly for hair conditions such as dry, brittle, damaged hair or hair loss.
  • Coconut Oil - It has anti-microbial activity, used for oily skin.
  • Cocoa Butter - It is an excellent emollient, softens and smoothens the skin, beneficial in the treatment and prevention of stretch marks.
  • Emu Oil - It is a natural emollient, containing linolenic acid. It is used for dry skin, stretch marks, under eyes puffiness, age spots, wrinkles.
  • Grapeseed Oil - It absorbs very well without feeling greasy. This is one of the most common oils used for massage. It is usually mixed with other more nutrient rich carrier oil. Good for oily skin and acne.
  • Hazelnut Oil - It contains vitamins, minerals, proteins, and essential fatty acids. Good for facial blends for oily or combination skin. It is used in dilution with other carrier oils due to its strong aroma.
  • Evening Primrose Oil - It is an excellent moisturizer, high in linolenic acid which is responsible for healthy functioning of body tissues. Excellent oil for dry, aging skin.
  • Sesame Oil - It is light weight, very rich in nutrients and extra moisturizing. It is a great base for massage oil because it spreads easily and it absorbs fast, with no greasy feeling. Softens and heals dry skin.
  • Wheat Germ Oil - It very high in Vitamin E, stimulating tissue regeneration. Good for aging skin, wrinkles, scars and stretch marks.

    • Essential Oils - Chamomile, Lavender, Geranium, Rose, Neroli, Ylang Ylang, Jasmine, Rosewood, Sandalwood.
    • Carrier Oils - Sweet Almond, Jojoba, Avocado, Wheatgerm, Evening Primrose, Borage, Apricot and Peach Kernel.

  • Oily Skin
    • Essential Oils - Lavender, Geranium, Cedarwood, Bergamot, Tea Tree, Cypress, Juniper Berry, Myrtle, Mandarin, Orange, Lemon, Lemongrass.
    • Carrier Oils - Jojoba, Grapeseed, Sweet Almond.

  • Combination Skin
    • Essential Oils - Lavender, Geranium, Palmarosa, Chamomile, Rose, Rosewood, Sandalwood, Neroli, Mandarin.
    • Carrier Oils - Sweet Almond, Jojoba, Apricot Kernel, Evening Primrose.

  • Sensitive Skin
    • Essential Oils - Chamomile, Lavender, Geranium, Neroli, Mandarin.
    • Carrier Oils - Sweet Almond, Jojoba, Evening Primrose.

  • Dehydrated Skin
    • Essential Oils - Chamomile, Lavender, Geranium, Rose, Jasmine, Sandalwood.
    • Carrier Oils - Sweet Almond, Jojoba, Avocado, Wheatgerm, Evening Primrose, Borage, Apricot and Peach Kernel.

  • Mature Skin
    • Essential Oils - Chamomile, Lavender, Geranium, Tea Tree Patchouli, Palmarosa, Rosewood, Sandalwood.
    • Carrier Oils - Sweet Almond, Jojoba, Avocado, Wheatgerm, Evening Primrose, Borage, Apricot and Peach Kernel.

  • For joint pain - anti-rheumatic Essential Oils like: Cajuput, Celery, Chamomile, Cypress, Eucalyptus, Hyssop, Juniper, Lemon, Lavender, Oregano, Pine, Rosemary, Thyme.
  • For headaches - Basil, Eucalyptus, Grapefruit, Lavender, Peppermint.
  • For insomnia - Chamomile, Lavender, Clary Sage, Neroli, Sandalwood.
  • For depression - Lavender, Neroli, Ylang-Ylang.
