Ginseng (Panax Ginseng)
Ginseng is a herbal remedy derived from the roots of several plants: Asian (Panax Ginseng), Siberian (Eleutherococcus Senticosus) and American (Panax Quinquefolius). All these plants belong to the same family, but each of them have different effects on the human body. The most researched and commonly used species is the Asian Ginseng.
The term "Panax" comes from the greek word "panakeia" which means "universal remedy", and the term "ginseng" is derived from the Chinese term "jen-shen" which means "in the image of a man". Some ginseng roots are shaped like humans, and are considered very desirable. Some very old roots, up to hundred years old are even more prized, because it is said that their longevity is transferred to the person who uses it.

It has been used in Asia for about 5000 years. Because of its popularity in Asia, it became the most widely used medicine. Six million people in US alone consume Ginseng regularly!
It has been used in traditional Chinese medicine for treatment of weakness and fatigue.
The Chinese believed that Ginseng root resembles a human being, and it contains supernatural powers.
Native Americans used it for increasing the women's fertility and also to increase mental powers.
In western countries it was considered an aphrodisiac.
It was believed that it can slow down the aging process.
Modern Day Use
Ginseng products are popularly named "tonics" because they boost the mental and physical functioning, general vitality and stamina.
It boosts up the immune system and enhances strength.
It promotes relaxation and is used for treatment of fatigue, depression, anxiety or prolonged stress.
It is anti-inflammatory, antioxidant, and anticancer. It can be safely used for treatment of joint pain.
The root is dried and used to make over-the counter tablets, extracts and tea as well as creams for external use. Ginseng is not a drug and should not be taken as such. It is classified by the Food and Drug Administration (FDA) as a "generally recognized safe food".
