Wild Yam (Dioscorea Villosa)
Wild Yam can be found growing in most temperate climates in the world.
One species of Yam, Dioscorea Villosa, is believed to have originated in East Central North America. A related species, Dioscorea Opposita, is native to China.
Both of these species contain diosgenin, a chemical substance with certain medicinal effects. Wild Yam species from other regions of the world may have different chemical content.
The diosgenin contained in the root of this "miracle plant" is a steroid-like substance that is believed to convert into the female hormone progesterone. There is a clear connection between diosgenin and endocrine function which is still studied by scientists.
History and Folklore
In the 18th and 19th centuries, this plant was used by herbalists to treat menstrual cramps and problems related to childbirth.
In the 1990’s the diosgenin found in Yam was promoted as a cure for menopause symptoms and other symptoms related to women aging.
The discovery of diosgenin in Wild Yam revolutionized the pharmaceutical industry. Diosgenin had a major role in the making of hormones and the development of the birth control pill, two of the major advances in plant drug medicine.
